Investigation underway after officers involved in shooting in Red Deer

A male suspect was shot by Red Deer RCMP after police received a complaint about a firearm being discharged at a local Walmart parking lot at about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

RCMP said during the investigation officers located the suspect at about 2:15 p.m. in the area Garden Heights and Carleton Avenue.

During his arrest, an interaction occurred where officers discharged their firearms, and the suspect was taken to hospital with injuries.

No officers were injured during this incident.

At about 4:40 p.m., Red Deer RCMP warned the public to avoid the area as officers were responding to an incident.

At the time police said there was no immediate threat to the public and requested that residents refrain from posting photos of officers on social media.

Alberta RCMP said as soon as they became aware of the incident, the director of law enforcement was notified, and an internal review process was initiated.

The director deemed the incident to be “in scope” and has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate.

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the Alberta RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident.

RCMP training, policy, police response, and the duty status of the members involved will be subject to review.

The Alberta RCMP is fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident.
