Graduates of Red Deer College won’t get an in-person graduation ceremony this summer.

The college said Thursday that a virtual convocation is the best option to celebrate grads in a safe way.

On June 3 and 4, RDC will be presenting virtual convocation ceremonies for students graduating in 2021, as well as those who graduated in June 2020.

A video celebrating convocation 2020 graduates will be available June 3, with the video for convocation 2021 graduates available on June 4.

“Convocation is a time for celebration, because it provides an important moment for graduates and their families and friends, along with all of us at RDC, to pause and reflect on all that has been accomplished,” said Dr. Peter Nunoda, RDC president.

“Even though we would prefer to share the joy with our graduates in person, I am confident that we will present celebratory and memorable convocation ceremonies through a virtual platform.”

RDC said the decision was made because it’s the best way to comply with Alberta Health measures and keep students safe.

“Last June, we celebrated our graduates through RDC’s social media platforms,” said Nunoda.

“This year, we’ve chosen to share virtual convocation ceremonies for our graduates from 2020 and 2021, because we feel this is our best current option to celebrate and personalize convocation in a safe way. We want all of our graduates to be able to sit down with family and friends to enjoy their convocation ceremony.”
