Just as Red Deer helped provide team Canada with a place to get ready for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, the team provided Red Deer with an unexpected parting gift.
While in Red Deer for selection camp, the team was forced into 14-day quarantine after several members tested positive for COVID-19.
During that break from training, the players competed in a contest – to see who could create their own Bob Ross inspired painting.
In total, 45 paintings were put up for auction during the tournament and Tuesday, Tourism Red Deer and The Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce announced that $10,600 was raised for local charities.
Bidders are expected to receive their paintings in the coming weeks.
Canadian forward Dawson Mercer, of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, watched his painting sell for a team-high of $570 and had more than 38 bids.
