The Central Alberta Buccaneers finished off an undefeated season in thrilling fashion ahead of the Alberta Football League playoffs.
The Bucs high flying offence was on display once again in Fort Saskatchewan, as they edged out a 46-42 win over the Edmonton Elite to finish off the year 4-0.
It took a mammoth fourth-quarter effort from the Bucs, who trailed by 21 points at halftime.
Bucs quarterback Brandon Leyh kickstarted the comeback with a touchdown strike at the end of the third quarter. After an onside kick, the Bucs got the ball back and Leyh found Matthew Leyh to cut the deficit to 14.
Down one score in the fourth, Leyh hit Braydon Epp on a 40-yard touchdown strike and the extra point tied the game at 42. Central Alberta went ahead on the ensuing kickoff with a kick through the endzone, before kicker Aideen Samadi hit a field goal late in the fourth to extend the lead.
With the win, the Bucs secured first place and will host the Airdrie Irish on Aug. 21 at Setters Place in Red Deer. Kickoff is 6 p.m.
If the Bucs knock off the Irish, they will host the AFL final on Aug. 28. Earlier this season, Central Alberta crushed the Irish 46-3.
