Despite some cold and rainy conditions, local athletes collected some hardware at the 2019 Alberta Schools Athletic Association Track and Field Provincials in Calgary.
On Day 1, seven athletes from Central Alberta earned medals at the meet.
Notre Dame’s Illya Omelyanchuk, who medaled in his last two trips to provincials in long jump, picked up gold in the senior triple jump. He leaped 13.10 metres to win the event.
He will compete in the long jump and high jump on Saturday.
His teammate Zach Jansen grabbed bronze in the 100m hurdles in 14.28 seconds.

Representing Lindsay Thurber, Jeremiah Lauzon took gold in the senior men’s 200m race. He was the only athlete to eclipse the 22-second mark, winning the final in a time of 21.93.
Jared Howse of St. Joseph High School earned silver early in the day Friday. He finished second in the 3000m intermediate category with a time of 9:16.61, three and a half seconds back of winner Bill Makwae.

Lacombe runner Jencia Swartz also medaled, capturing silver in the 800m junior race in 2:18.23.
Wetaskiwin’s Connor Nichols was the top competitor in the junior pole vault, getting over the bar at 2.70m.
Haylin Eling of Olds earned silver in the junior women’s shot put with a toss of 11.63m.
