The Central Alberta Buccaneers received one last tip of the cap from the Alberta Football League for their successful regular season.
The league named its first and second all-star teams Wednesday and 12 Bucs’ players earned nods.
Leading the way on first-team offence was quarterback Jarrett Burzuk. The pivot had a strong season, collecting 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while completing 52 per cent of his passes for 1,813 total yards.
Receivers Ben Hnatiuk and Axsivier Lawrence were a big help for Burzuk and also received first-team nominations. Hnatiuk was the top wideout in the league with 42 catches for 861 yards, adding nine touchdown catches. That was just a touch better than Lawrence, who had 748 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. Lawrence did have a better yards-per-catch average at 20.8 compared to Hnatiuk’s 20.5 number.
Offensive tackle Clinton Sharp and offensive guard Vince Roth were also all-stars.
On defence, cornerback Tylor Johannesson was a first-team all-star, as he had two interceptions and 3.5 sacks. Syngyn Sperling was also an all-star as a halfback and at linebacker, Todd Lewis received a nod. Bucs safety Andrew Taylor, who led the league with 11 interceptions was a second-team all-star on defence.
Ashton Jones, Riley St. Denis and Pascal Plante all earned second-team all-star honours.
