The RDC Kings were dominant from the outset against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference soccer play.

On a chilly and snowy afternoon, it was the Kings who breezed past the Vikings with a three-goal outburst in the second half and a 4-0 victory.

There was never much pressure from the banged-up Vikings, but Kings head coach Wade Groenewegen said it was nice to see his group execute the game plan under tough conditions and actually find the back of the net.

“In fairness, Augustana is really beat up right now. They came in trying to secure as safe a result as possible. When you have those games, you can really break down and lose track of what’s important. I really felt like we didn’t do that,” Groenewegen said.

“We really stuck with that was important. Kept the ball moving, kept rolling as we should. It’s easy to get sucked into that game and keep running into the brick wall. We showed good cohesion; we showed good movement. I would have liked a lot more finish quality-wise, but result wise, it didn’t really matter.”

At the half, the Kings only led 1-0 on a goal from Nathan Swartz and as time went on in the second, they really asserted their dominance and it resulted in goals.

First, Pedro Humberto notched a tally then five minutes later Swartz added his second of the game. Gabriel Fonseca notched the fourth of the game in the 79th minute to round out the scoring.

Humberto factored in on his goal, added an assist and was also partially responsible for the fourth goal. That earned him a player of the game for the Kings.

“He just got the shots on net. He really didn’t do anything super different than anyone we had in there before,” Groenewegen said.

“When he came in and he had an opportunity to put it on net in a dangerous way, it allowed us to generate. There was a goal off of one, we also generated one of his rebound. He had a big impact. The big thing was just getting on target.”

First-year Kings goalkeeper Rhys Groenewegen earned his first career ACAC shutout.

The Kings will host the Ambrose University Lions next Sunday at 2 p.m.
