RDC Queens hockey win ACAC season opener

The RDC Queens spoiled the Olds College Broncos Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference women’s hockey home opener.

RDC scored a pair of power play goals in the 3-2 victory and fifth-year goalie Karlee Fetch made 18 saves to pick up her first win of the season.

Second-year Mary Hirsh had the first man-advantage marker for the Queens and added an assist on a second-period power play goal from Ashley Sutherland, who also had an assist.

Olds opened the scoring at 6:36 of the first, before Hirsh responded midway through the frame.

Rookie Brooklyn Rowley notched her first goal of the season at 9:14 of the second before Sutherland, a second-year defender scored on the power play 1:28 later.

Sarah Jarvis and Abby Webster had goals for the Broncos in the loss. Broncos goalie Lexi Bruce made 34 saves.

Sutherland was the player of the game for the Queens and Jarvis earned the honour for Olds.

The Queens will host the Broncos in their home opener at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre Friday night, with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
