Red Deer Riggers earn win over Edmonton Cubs

Red Deer improved to 5-3 on the Sunburst Baseball League season

The Red Deer Riggers got back to their winnings ways Thursday night in Sunburst Baseball League action, earning a tight 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Cubs.

Josh Edwards tossed a gem for the Riggers with five innings of three-hit ball, including five strikeouts, one earned run and one walk. Edwards also had two hits and an RBI in the victory.

The only runs for Red Deer came in the third inning, with both Edwards and Cooper Jones cashing in RBIs. The Riggers only managed five hits on the night.

Edmonton got their lone run in the fifth, an RBI courtesy of Dean Olson.

Davin Gulbransen and Kai Poffenroth closed out the game for the Riggers on the mound, each pitching a shutout in their one inning of work.

The Cubs had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t cash the tying run.

Russell Rockwell had nine strikeouts in the complete game effort for the Cubs.

With the win, the Riggers moved to 5-3 on the year.

Next up for the Riggers is a road date with the Calgary Rockies on June 6 at Pogadl Park in Sylvan Lake.
