For many of us, we are highly fascinated with true crime stories. From podcasts to Netflix series, the genre of true crime continues to grow and can spur many important conversations around social justice inequities. However, it can also resurface trauma for victims and their loved ones who are impacted by these crimes.

First of all, let me say that I’m so sad that I never got a chance to meet fellow columnist Treena Mielke. As you may know, she passed away last weekend.

Having exhausted year end countdowns (including the one before midnight on December 31 that signals the start of our new year’s resolutions), it is time for humans to consult our inner Nostradamus and provide predictions for the upcoming year.

Another New Year is now well upon us. While this is generally a time to speculate as to what the coming year will bring, it is also fun to reflect back 30 some years ago to the New Year of 1992. While there are a great many differences between Red Deer three decades ago and Red Deer today, there are also some surprising similarities.

It was with sadness that I heard the news of Treena Mielke’s passing, as I have known Treena for several years. I remember her back during her days with the Sylvan Lake News , and then we worked together for several years at the Red Deer Express . Treena went on to be editor of the Rimbey Review – and not only did she cover any community she worked in really well, she was also very much appreciated for her superb columns, which appeared in several local papers over the years.

I still distinctly remember the smell of cow manure, or horse poop, that one faithful Christmas. I was young and didn’t really know how to distinguish between the two.

Christmastime will soon be upon us. It is a time when tradition is very important to most people as they celebrate the season. It is therefore interesting to reflect back 70 years ago to the Christmas of 1952.
